This week’s article is for health conscious individuals that love fish. California has an incredible abundance of fresh seafood just waiting to be discovered by adventurous eaters. Fish also contains many beneficial nutrients and protein that will be great for a healthy meal. Here are 3 of the world’s healthiest fish and why you should implement them in your diet.

Cods

Cod is a readily-available seafood year round. It has a mild and versatile flavor so the usage in different types of entrees is flawless. North Atlantic cod is the most recognized type around the US, but there are many other varieties.

Health Benefits

  • Cardiovascular– Cod has a large amount of blood-thinning Omega-3 fatty acids. It also contains an excellent source of vitamins B12 and B6. Omega-3-rich fish consumption improves the electrical properties of heart cells, protecting against fatal abnormal heart rhythms.
  • Protection against Cancer– A diet rich in the omega-3 fats found in cold water cod greatly reduces risk of colorectal cancer. Studies have shown that those whose diets provided the most omega-3s had a 37% reduction in colorectal cancer risk.

Salmon

Scallops are a type of shellfish used in many different entrées ranging from Italian to French cuisine. The part of the scallop that is generally consumed is called the nut, which is the muscle that opens and closes the shell. They have a chewy and flavorful texture.

Health Benefits

  • Protection against Stroke– The vitamin rich fish contains vital nutrients that help thin the blood and prevent blood clots. Eating scallops 1-3 times per month will greatly increase blood flow in order to prevent blood-related ailments.
  • Increases Heart Rate Variability– By providing greater variability between beats, the marine omega 3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, reduce the risk of arrhythmia or sudden death. These changes can be apparent in as little at 3 weeks. That is quite a substantial change for such a simple diet alteration.
